GEO, AEO, GSO, LLMO… P?
When I first saw these acronyms flooding my SEO feeds, my immediate reaction was: “Here we go again.”
But here’s the thing. I’ve spent years immersed in gaming, where terms like “LF2M +14 TOP NEED HERO” make perfect sense to players. To outsiders, it sounds like nonsense. That same experience prepared me for what I’m seeing in digital marketing today. AI SEO acronyms can sound impressive, but often they just rename strategies that have been part of search optimization for years.
What has changed is how we apply those strategies using artificial intelligence. Now we optimize content for AI systems, align structure with voice assistants, and write in formats that AI models like ChatGPT can interpret.
Strong visibility in search results depends on understanding user intent, improving user experience, and using analytics to guide content decisions. If you want to optimize your content for AI, focus on query relevance, assistant compatibility, and clarity that works across platforms.
AI SEO Acronyms: Flashy Terms for Fundamentals
Let’s break some of them down:
- GEO: Generative Engine Optimization
- AEO: Answer Engine Optimization
- LLMO: Large Language Model Optimization
- AIO: AI Optimization
- GSO: Generative Search Optimization
- SXO: Search Experiene Optimization
They sound advanced. Futuristic. Necessary for survival in the AI age.
But here’s the reality: we’re still doing SEO.
Search engine optimization hasn’t disappeared. We still:
- Create content aligned with search intent
- Optimize site structure and technical SEO
- Make content easy for users and search engines to understand
- Build authority and relevance across platforms
It’s all familiar work. Now it’s wrapped in acronyms like “LLMO” and “AIO.”
The Great Rebranding: AI SEO Acronyms in Action
I’ve been in SEO for over 10 years, and seeing acronyms like GEO and AEO being pitched as groundbreaking concepts only confirms one thing: it’s the same SEO we’ve been doing for a decade, just with a shiny new label.
Content creation, technical SEO, backlinking strategies, site structure—these are the same tactics we’ve used for years. But now, they’re packaged under AI SEO terminology like AI optimization and AI-driven strategies.
Google’s Gary Illyes confirmed this when he debunked much of the AI Search buzz, stating that standard SEO remains the foundation, even for AI overviews.
But despite this clarity, there’s still no universal taxonomy for these terms. Agencies are using different acronyms for the same exact strategies. This creates a confusing and often noisy landscape for marketers and SEO professionals alike.
Real Changes vs. Marketing Fluff: AI SEO in Practice
Let’s get real for a moment: some aspects of SEO have changed, thanks to AI.
After Google’s Helpful Content Update, platforms like Reddit became incredibly valuable for backlinking, representing a true shift in tactics. Data from Semrush reveals a massive spike in Reddit’s ranking in 2024 for keywords that SEO professionals had spent years chasing.
When I present monthly results to clients, they get excited about these real shifts, such as ChatGPT optimization or using Reddit strategies. These shifts drive engagement and results, unlike the endless SEO acronyms that don’t really move the needle.
The AI SEO Reality: Buzzwords Don’t Drive Results
Here’s my brutally honest take: we’re all just marketing with buzzwords.
That’s how business works. You gotta jump on the trends.
But there’s a difference between speaking the market’s language and contributing to the noise. I walk that line by being brutally honest with facts and numbers.
When clients come to me excited about “revolutionary” AI Search strategies, I tell them the truth. AI SEO strategies ARE SEO strategies. We have more than 10 years of experience doing exactly that.
Some strategies need slight tweaking. Reddit backlinking wasn’t on my radar five years ago. Now it’s almost a no-brainer.
But the fundamentals? Content optimization, keyword strategy, technical SEO, site structure? That’s the same toolkit I’ve always used.
The Bottom Line
Every industry creates specialized language. Gaming has it. SEO has it. AI Search has it.
The difference is knowing when you’re looking at genuine innovation versus old wine in new bottles.
Most of these AI Search terms are just SEO fundamentals with fresh packaging. The sooner you recognize that pattern, the sooner you can focus on what actually matters.
Moving the needle for your clients.
Everything else is just acronyms.
You don’t need new acronyms. You need SEO that actually moves the needle. I’ve been doing that for 10+ years. Hit me up if you want facts over fluff.
