45 Percent of Your Customers are Using AI Search and You Are Not There
You probably think your local SEO is doing just fine because your dashboard says so.
You log into your Google Business Profile and see that impressions are up. Maybe you are even ranking in the top three for your main keywords.
If you are a plumber or a contractor, you might see those green arrows and think the phone is about to start ringing off the hook.
But then the shop stays quiet. The leads do not come in. You start wondering if your tracking is broken or if everyone in town just stopped needing pipes fixed at the same time.
I am here to tell you that those numbers are lying to you.
We have entered the era of phantom visibility. This is a situation where your business looks like it is winning on paper while it is actually disappearing from the real world.
The death of the traditional click
Search Engine Land recently highlighted a massive shift in how people actually find local businesses.
Just one year ago, only 6 percent of consumers were using AI tools like ChatGPT or Perplexity to find a professional.
Today, that number has exploded to 45 percent.
That is nearly half of your potential customers. They are not scrolling through the Google Map Pack anymore. They are not clicking on your blue link.
They are asking a bot to tell them who to hire.
Google’s own share as a recommendation platform has dropped from 83 percent to 71 percent in a massive hurry.
If you are still only worried about your “rankings” on a standard search page, you are missing half the market.

Why phantom visibility is a trap
Phantom visibility happens when Google shows your business in its new AI Overviews but does not give the user a reason to click.
Google might use your data to answer a question. It might tell the user exactly what a “main line clog” looks like and how to fix it using your content.
The user gets the answer. They feel satisfied. They leave.
Your dashboard records that as an “impression.” It looks like someone saw you.
In reality, that user never even saw your phone number. They never visited your site.
You provided the free labor for Google’s AI and got exactly zero dollars in return.
This is why I constantly tell my clients that revenue is the only metric that matters.
If your “visibility” is going up but your bank account is not, you are being haunted by phantom metrics.
The AI bot is the new gatekeeper
Think about the last time you used ChatGPT.
When a customer asks an AI “Who is the best emergency plumber in Denver?” the bot does not show a list of ten blue links.
It picks a winner. Or maybe it picks three.
If you are not in that specific “consideration set,” you do not exist to that user.
Research from SOCi shows that only about 45 percent of businesses that rank well in traditional Google search actually show up in AI recommendations.
That means more than half of the businesses winning at “old SEO” are invisible to the 45 percent of people using AI.
The bot is skipping you because it does not trust your data or it cannot find enough third party proof that you are the best.
I have seen AI overviews eat clicks for breakfast, and it is not getting any better for people who refuse to adapt.

Why your Google ranking does not guarantee a win anymore
In the old days, SEO was about keywords. You put the right words on the page and you bought some links.
Now, the game is about “entities.”
AI models do not just look at your website. They look at the entire internet to see what people say about you.
They look at your reviews on Yelp. They look at your mentions in local news. They look at your data on Apple Maps and Bing.
If 85 percent of your brand mentions come from third party sources, that is what the AI is going to use to decide if you are worth recommending.
If you have a shitty reputation on a site you haven’t checked in five years, the AI might see that and decide to skip you entirely.
The plumber with the “perfect ranking” has no idea he’s being passed over because ChatGPT found a bad review from 2019 on an obscure directory.
How to stop being a ghost
You cannot just “do SEO” anymore. You have to do AI SEO implementation.
This starts with making sure the bots can actually read your data.
You need clean schema markup. You need consistent information across every single platform where your business lives.
But more than that, you need to be mentioned in the places these models “study.”
If you are not seeding the LLMs with the right information, you are leaving your business’s reputation up to chance.
I call this LLM seeding. It is the process of making sure that when an AI looks for a local expert, your name is the most logical answer it can find.
It is not about tricking the system. It is about being so present and so verified that the bot would look stupid not to recommend you.

Stop paying for vanity metrics
If your current SEO agency is sending you reports full of “impressions” and “keyword movements” while your phone is silent, they are selling you bullshit.
They are showing you the phantom and calling it a ghost.
You need to know how many of those impressions actually lead to a human being calling your office.
The reality is that AI is evolving SEO faster than most “experts” can keep up with.
I spent years in the trenches of SEO before I could afford fancy tools or big offices. I learned how to get results when every dollar mattered.
I do not care about “pretty” dashboards. I care about whether or not you are getting skipped by the 45 percent of people who have moved on from traditional search.
If you are not appearing in ChatGPT or Gemini, you are losing half your leads before they even know you exist.
Getting back in the game
The first step is to stop looking at Google as the only search engine.
It is still the biggest player, but it is no longer the only one that matters.
Check your visibility in Perplexity. Ask ChatGPT who the best contractor in your city is.
If your name does not come up, you have a problem that a higher Google ranking won’t fix.
You need a strategy that covers the “AI discovery layer.”
This is not a “game changer.” It is a fundamental shift in how the world works.
If you stay stuck in the 2013 playbook, you are going to get left behind.
I have helped businesses triple their revenue by cutting through the noise and focusing on what actually moves the needle.
Stop being a phantom. Start being the answer.
