Evolving SEO and Why the Old Playbook is Dead

People don’t just “Google it” anymore.

Search is fragmenting.

Younger generations are searching on TikTok. Professionals are searching on LinkedIn. Tech nerds are asking Claude or ChatGPT for direct answers.

When people do use Google, they aren’t always looking for a list of websites. They want an answer.

This is where evolving seo starts to get complicated.

Google launched AI Overviews to keep people on their page. If someone asks “how to fix a leaky faucet,” Google’s AI summarizes the steps right at the top.

The user gets their answer. They never click a link.

According to some recent data, the average click through rate on the first organic position drops about 34.5 percent when an AI Overview is present.

That is a massive blow to businesses that rely on organic traffic. Ranking number one doesn’t mean what it used to.

AI is not intelligent but it is changing the game

I’ve said before that AI is not intelligent.

It is a prediction engine. It guesses the next most likely word in a sequence based on a massive dataset.

However, even if it isn’t “thinking,” it is fundamentally changing how content is consumed.

Large Language Models (LLMs) are the new gatekeepers.

Instead of just optimizing for a crawler that looks for keywords, we now have to worry about how these models perceive our brand.

This is a process called LLM seeding.

It involves making sure your brand, your expertise, and your unique data are present in the places where AI models go to learn.

If ChatGPT doesn’t know who you are, you don’t exist in the AI search landscape.

Here’s the thing. You can’t just spam your way into an LLM.

These models prioritize consensus and authority. They look for brand citations rather than just raw backlinks.

If five different reputable sites mention your expertise in a specific niche, the AI starts to associate your name with that topic. That is the new version of “ranking.”

Connected content hubs and structured topic clusters representing topical authority in modern SEO.

Topical authority is the new currency

In the old playbook, you could write a one off post about a random topic and rank for it.

Those days are gone.

Now, Google and AI systems look for topical authority.

They want to see that you are an expert across an entire subject matter.

If you run a cannabis business, you can’t just write one post about “best strains.” You need to cover the science, the culture, the legal landscape, and the consumer experience.

You need to own the entire conversation.

When you build topical authority, you create a web of relevance that is much harder for an algorithm to ignore.

It tells the search engine that you aren’t just trying to grab a quick click. It tells them you are a reliable source of information.

This is a core part of what is organic growth in the modern era. It’s a slow burn, but it’s the only thing that actually lasts.

Technical SEO is more important than ever

Some people think AI means technical SEO is dead.

They are wrong.

Actually, technical SEO is more important now because AI systems need clean data to understand your site.

If your site structure is a mess, the AI won’t be able to parse your information correctly.

If your site is slow, users will bounce before the AI Overview even finishes loading.

If you are using outdated tech like iframe menus, you are actively hiding your content from search engines.

You have to make it as easy as possible for robots to read your site so they can accurately summarize it for humans.

Think of your technical setup as the foundation of your house. You can have the most beautiful furniture in the world, but if the foundation is cracked, the whole thing is going to sink into the mud.

Clean technical SEO concept with site structure, performance signals, and structured data visualization.

Stop writing for robots

This might sound counterintuitive since I just spent five minutes talking about AI.

But the biggest mistake people make in this era of evolving seo is trying to sound like a machine.

The internet is currently being flooded with generic, bland, AI generated fluff.

Most of it is soul-less. It has no perspective. It has no “teeth.”

Google is getting better at identifying this kind of content. They want to surface content that has “Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, and Trustworthiness” (E-E-A-T).

You can’t fake experience.

You can’t fake a personal story about how you got an SEO job or how a client’s revenue tripled.

The more the web becomes saturated with AI garbage, the more valuable human perspective becomes.

Don’t be afraid to be a little weird. Don’t be afraid to have an opinion.

The “basement nerd” vibe I lean into isn’t a character. It’s who I am. And that authenticity is something an LLM can’t replicate.

Evolving SEO is about integration

In the old days, SEO lived in its own little silo.

The SEO person would send a list of keywords to the writer, the writer would cram them into a blog, and the dev would hit publish.

That doesn’t work anymore.

Success now requires a mix of PR, content strategy, technical expertise, and a deep understanding of AI.

You need to be thinking about how your content looks on a mobile screen, how it sounds when read by a voice assistant, and how it gets cited in a ChatGPT response.

It is much more complex. It is also much more rewarding for the people who actually know what they are doing.

The “snake oil” salesmen who used to sell “guaranteed page 1 rankings” are struggling. They can’t guarantee anything in a world where the search results are generated dynamically by an AI.

That is good news for businesses that actually care about quality.

My final take on the shift

The old playbook relied on a stable, predictable system.

The new playbook is built on volatility.

AI is evolving SEO into something that looks a lot more like brand building than traditional technical optimization.

If you want to win, you have to stop chasing the algorithm and start chasing the user.

Answer their questions better than anyone else.

Be present in the conversations happening across the web.

Ensure your technical foundation is rock solid.

And for the love of everything, stop publishing boring content.

The basement is quiet today, but the digital landscape is screaming for something real. Be the person who gives it to them.
